October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
If you are about to have breast or chest surgery, it’s crucial to find the right bra to take into hospital and wear in the weeks immediately after your operation. It is not only crucial for effective support but will boost your confidence and keep you feeling you.
Fit for purpose
Have you had a bra fitting lately? It really is worth taking the time to have an expert fitting before you go into hospital. Not only will it ensure that your bra is beautifully comfortable, but an experienced fitter can also help ensure that the band won’t be too tight immediately post-surgery and that you allow for your increased or decreased cup size (where relevant).
If you can’t get along for a fitting before you go into hospital, here are our top tips.
The band of the bra should fit snugly around your ribs and not ride up at the back
Your breast(s) should be fully enclosed within the cup of the bra, with no bulges or wrinkles
If you are going to have breast augmentation or reduction, allow for the cup size you will have after surgery (with some space for post-operative swelling)
Fit your bra on one of the middle fastenings, giving you the chance to loosen or tighten the bra if you need to.
If you wear a prosthesis, fit the bra to your natural breast and make sure the bra is supporting it well – especially if you have recently lost or gained weight.
Depending on your procedure, your surgeon will talk to you about the best style of bra to wear after the operation. Some surgeons advise wearing a sports bra – probably because they offer light compression and are often non-wired. However, many believe it’s best to wear a bra that is specifically designed for the immediate post-surgery period.
The bras we'd recommend as most suitable for wearing straight after surgery are – 1010 and 1020 Comfi-Bra and the 1008 and 2008 Silver Post Surgery Bra. As well as being wirefree, they also have light compression to help reduce swelling and promote healing and front fasteners for ease of access and dressing.
The 1010 Comfi Bra
With high cotton content for breathability, the 1010 bra is ideal to take into hospital and wear home and because it is so soft, it's an ideal sleep bra too. Being front fastening, the bra is easier to reach the popper closures, avoiding fiddly hook and eye fastening.
The 1020 Comfi Bra
With all the benefits of the 1010 bra, the 1020 bra has VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners replacing poppers for even easier dressing.
The 1008 Post Surgery Bra
The Silver Post Surgery Bra is specifically designed to help care for your surgery site. It contains real silver fibre, which has anti-bacterial properties and can aid the recovery of scar tissues. The underband of this bra is designed to fit well below the root of the breast so that it does not irritate surgery scars, which is particularly helpful if you've had breast implants. Other cleaver design features include front fastening for easy dressing and access to surgery areas, VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners straps with touch and close fastening for simple adjustment and perfect comfort, and double layer cups for added support.
The 2008 Post Surgery Bra
With all the benefits of the 1008 bra, the 2008 bra has VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners replacing poppers for even easier dressing.
Continue with wire-free support
Why not stay wirefree, for full support and maximum comfort?
Before you know it, the post-surgery healing process will be well underway, and you will be able to choose some beautiful new bras! But why not stay wire-free to stay comfortable and feel beautiful?
The Zero Feel Pull On Top Bra
Experience extreme comfort with this flat seamed top with removable lightly padded cups. There are no fastening as this super-stretchy style pulls on making it perfect to wear after breast surgery healing. Available in beige and black and with optional matching knickers, they are sure to help boost your confidence.

This UK charity takes a comprehensive approach to help individuals manage the physical and mental health symptoms of living with arthritis. As the largest collective force in the UK dedicated to tackling the challenges faced by those with dementia, Alzheimer's Society brings together a wealth of knowledge and experience. They run a support call line, online community groups and are currently funding multiple research projects all over the country.
For example, one project at the University of Bath aims to investigate how to clear toxic amyloid protein from the brain in Alzheimer's disease. Another project, led by Dr. Teresa Niccoli at University College London, focuses on understanding the effects of the diabetes type 2 drug Metformin on models of Alzheimer's disease.

At the Stroke Association, their belief is that everyone deserves the opportunity to rebuild their life after a stroke. They provide essential support, fund critical research, and advocate for the best care and assistance for stroke survivors.
In addition to offering emotional and communicational support to hundreds of thousands of individuals across the UK, they also fund significant research projects nationwide. For instance, they support Professor Antonio Belli and the GHoSt team at the University of Birmingham in their development of a lateral flow test for strokes. They are also backing Margarita Saranti in her project to make artificial intelligence work for stroke rehabilitation.

]]>Katie combined her knowledge and background in fashion with a determined mission to bring her adaptive designs to more people to make them feel confident and comfortable in the clothes they wear. Even as the business has grown, Katie, her mum, her grandma and daughters have all played an integral part of the family business. Read our Q&A with Katie about how it feels to have four generations woven into the fabric of The Able Label and what it's really like behind-the-scenes of a family business...
Let’s start at the beginning and tell us about how your grandma inspired The Able Label.
I saw first hand the difficulties my grandmother faced when dressing, having been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. She especially struggled with manipulating fiddly fastenings like buttons, getting items over her head and bending down to pull trousers up. She also faced cognitive difficulties and would often dress items back to front. Later on, she needed more help with assisted dressing. We searched together for some solutions, but were both shocked by the lack of options available.
The Able Label was created to overcome such physical, cognitive and emotional challenges so many face with dressing on a daily basis. Our aim is to bridge the gap between function and fashion and give back independence as well as grow self-confidence. This is something not currently done by the fashion industry and we want to change this to help those in a similar situation to my grandmother.
How did your grandma help you develop The Able Label products?
She told me she felt as though she’d lost her dignity and independence, she certainly wasn’t going to sacrifice her style too - it therefore became my main goal to help her overcome these feelings. Designing, developing and testing a range of great-looking, adaptive clothes - she would often try items on so we could check ease of dressing and how the items fit on her.
When trying items on with her, she always used to say, “if you can help one other person in the position I am in, keep going”. She loved that the clothes didn’t look different to the clothes she wanted to wear, yet made life easier. I hope she continues to be proud of the work we have done with The Able Label in developing it to the brand it is today.
On the left you can see Katie's proud nan modelling an early version of our Imogen Jersey Shirt!
You’re lucky enough to work alongside your mum, did that happen quite naturally? How did your mum come to work with you on The Able Label?
It did - she has been involved since inception. The business really started when my nan needed a carer whilst mum (the sole-carer for nan), recovered from a serious operation.
My nan who at the time was living at home on her own at the grand age of 94, was adamant she didn’t want to go into a care home but knew she still needed some help to maintain as much independence as possible. I therefore decided to leave my job as a fashion buyer to become her carer whilst mum recovered.
At the same time, I began work on my dream establishing The Able Label with the aim of encouraging independence and self-confidence through clothing. Once mum had recovered, she helped with this and came to focus groups, trade shows etc helping to develop and grow the business. She now oversees customer services and of course plays the most important role of nana to Eva and Emily.
Describe a normal day in the office at TAL (as best as possible!)
A normal day in the office, is anything but normal! I get in and get the girls settled before starting my day. My role is focused more on buying so I check stocks and sales frequently, place orders and work on new designs for forthcoming seasons. The day is broken up with a lot of games of hide and seek in between!
I imagine it must be super comforting going into work with family around. What do you love about going to work with your mum and little ones?
You’ve not only been working on growing the business but also as mum to two kids. How do you balance these?
With great difficulty!! Running a business is tough but being a Mum is the hardest job of all. Good job I love both!
With the support of my mum and dad, I’m able to work a couple of days a week knowing the girls are in safe hands. There’s also a great team (who I can’t thank enough), working behind the scenes keeping everything running smoothly.
As I spend most days looking after the girls, I then spend most evenings doing my day's work once they have gone to sleep. I don’t think I have ever been so efficient - it’s incredible how much you can get done when you have such little time. This then enables me to spend quality time with them and continue to work on the thing I love - The Able Label.

What has been your proudest moment throughout your journey with The Able Label?
Having style icons like Joana Lumley and Caryn Franklin MBE endorse our work are really proud achievements.
The thing that makes me most proud though, is reading testimonials from customers, explaining what a positive difference we have made to their lives with our clothes.
We had one customer who was having to actually cut herself out of vests as it was just too difficult for her to dress into her current versions - she is now able to dress independently and no longer needs the scissors to hand!
Another customer was choosing not to go out as she feared that she wouldn’t be able to get her coat back on without asking for help - since discovering The Able Label, she has started going back out again.
Our clothes have helped to change lives - giving back independence and growing confidence, so seeing this is what I am most proud of and makes all the hard work worthwhile.
Can you tell us about a role model who has inspired you over your career?
Sally Bailey - the brand advisor, former CEO of White Stuff and fashion guru has helped many businesses to increase their turnover.
I am fortunate enough to have her as a mentor and can’t thank her enough for the continued support she has given us to not only to grow The Able Label as a business, but me as an individual.
She shares our vision of making positive change and creating a value-driven culture, putting people and customers at the centre of everything.
What advice would you give to other aspiring female entrepreneurs?
Go for it…! If you have a great idea, which solves a real problem and you can prove that your idea will successfully do this for those in need of it - go for it! Just make sure that it's in something that you are truly passionate about though as it is incredibly hard work running a business, so you have to love what you do in order to stay committed to it.
What is your favourite piece from the SS24 range and why?
I love the Paloma Wrap. It is a little piece of cosy luxury - perfect for now, whilst it’s still cold and also the summer too on cold evenings. There are no tricky armholes to contend with making it an easy throw-on, throw-off.
Tell us an achievement which you’re proud of from the last year.
The last year has quite honestly been one of the hardest I’ve faced. A pandemic, Brexit, war, the cost of living crisis and postal strikes have all been huge obstacles The Able Label team have had to work extremely hard to navigate through.
On top of this, I had my second child half way through the year!
The achievement I am most proud of from last year is not only having survived but thrived and grown the business doing so whilst being able to play the most important role of all - Mum.

]]>Adaptive clothing can help to avoid tricky fastenings, restricting shapes and allow for an all round less daunting experience. Discrete adaptations to clothes can transform lives, give back confidence and help to maintain your independence.
The Stroke recommended clothing range for both women and men has been designed to provide style without the struggle for self dressing and also to ease the process of assisted dressing if you do require extra help.
Here are some of our top tips for easier dressing;
If overhead dressing proves difficult, fully front opening options such as shirts, tops and nightwear provide a perfect solution. With the garment fully opened, you can use your unaffected arm to dress the affected side first. Then for undressing, take the garment off your unaffected side first then help to remove the affected side out.
If hand dexterity and strength is limited, avoid tricky fastenings such as buttons and zips by substituting these for touch-close alternatives such as VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners or poppers. The Able Label offers a vast range of front opening designs with secure VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners, designed to open and close with ease.
For an easier grip on your clothing with zips, apply a zipper pull which can help you 'hook' your fingers through.
Short sleeve styles are often the preferred option as they can provide ease of arm movement and a more casual feel. Wide opening sleeves such as raglan sleeves are designed with more room to feed your arms into.
For women, fastening bras can be particularly tricky, as they traditionally do up at the back. Front opening bras make it a lot easier to reach and grip onto the fastenings. Choose bras that use VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners for added ease of touch closures.
Suggested Products:
Womenswear - Beth Viscose Check Longline Long Sleeve VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners Shirt Front Opening Bras Raglan sleeve styles
Menswear - Michael Brushed Cotton Long Sleeve VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners Shirt in Grey Check Michael Brushed Cotton Long Sleeve VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners Shirt in Red Gingham
When looking for outerwear, bulky fastenings and stiff fabrics can make dressing into very restricting. Slippery and silky linings in clothing can help you to slip on styles, without having to manoeuvre limbs too much.
Suggested Products:
Womenswear- Marilyn Wool Blend Velcro Coat in Navy Marilyn Wool Blend VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners Coat in Grey Penelope Diamond Quilted Velcro Coat
Looser fitting styles with wider openings will make dressing much easier, and more comfortable. Sleeveless styles are even more ideal if you would prefer avoiding sleeves all together. Simply pop the wrap or poncho over your head and allow the garment to drape softly around you.
Relaxed clothing can provide all day comfortable and stylish layering without feeling restricted. Knitted styles are an easy care option as they don't crease!
Wide opening sleeves such as raglan sleeves are perfect for comfortable daytime dressing, with more room to feed your arms into.
Suggested Products:
Womenswear - Blanche Cable Knit Sleeveless Poncho Lianne Luxury Wrap Clarissa Stretch 3/4 Sleeve Jumper

Britain is one of the largest wool producers in the world, creating around 70,000 tonnes of wool per year. This all comes from the 34 million sheep that reside in the British Isles and the 45,000 sheep farmers who shear and auction the wool.
Wool isn’t a fast fibre, it’s a slow production and goes through at least ten processes from shearing, grading and auction, plus a few more steps before spinning, weaving, dyeing and finishing. Fast production in fashion is a huge sustainability issue. Faster production means more clothes and clothing waste created. So we make an effort to source as much of our materials domestically as possible and only produce to meet demand.
There are always improvements to be made, but we’re proud to celebrate British-made fashion and below are a few reasons we love using wool in our products and some woolly highlights from our collection for autumn and winter this year!
As a fully natural fibre, wool comes with a number of benefits. When it comes to fabric choice, materials which are warm and breathe well are at the top of our list for the winter collection. For those with mobility issues or conditions which can be worsened by cold weather, the ability to easily and comfortably keep warm is hugely important. Wool is known for being a highly breathable fabric with excellent temperature regulation.
It stays warm and keeps you dry even when it becomes wet as it naturally absorbs as well as repels water to keep the wearer as dry as possible. It has a high warmth to weight ratio, meaning wool clothing can be lighter and easy to layer, while naturally being soft on the skin.
A staple in our autumn and winter collections, we love knitted roll neck ponchos as they’re sleeveless for easy dressing while looking effortlessly stylish. Available in six colours, it has a beautiful cable knit design and is made from warm materials of wool and mohair.

Available in navy and grey, our Marilyn coat is a timeless, elegant style with raglan sleeves and a slippery lining for easily putting on and taking off. Plus it fastens with discreet VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners with button details for display only. Proudly made in Britain, it’s created from a wool blend fabric to keep you lovely and warm.
This warm wool rich smart A-line coat similarly fastenings with VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners but has buttons for display. The stylish collared coat keeps the cold off your neck and the pockets are practical, keeping your hands warm too.
Our chunky knitted socks are super soft and warm with a wool blend yarn while the non-slip grip sole makes them safer to wear around the home. Available for both men and women, these warm socks are an essential for winter.
A pair of soft wool knitted mittens with fluffy yarn lining are also a must for this season! Mittens are ideal for keeping hands and fingers warm, while their open design make them much easier to slip on and off hands compared to gloves.
]]>Adaptive clothing can help to manage and overcome a variety of dressing difficulties including reduced finger dexterity and joint discomfort. Discrete adaptations to clothes can transform lives, give back confidence, provide dignity and help to maintain independence.
The Arthritis recommended clothing range for both women and men has been designed to provide style without the struggle for self dressing and also to ease the process of assisted dressing.
Here are some of our top tips for easier dressing;
Looser fitting styles with wider openings will make dressing much easier, and more comfortable. Relaxed clothing can provide all day comfortable and stylish layering without feeling restricted.
Wide opening sleeves such as raglan sleeves are perfect for comfortable daytime dressing, with more room for arms if stiffness and rigidity is experienced. Sleeveless styles are even more ideal if you would prefer avoiding sleeves all together!
For night-time dressing, nightshirts and nightdresses avoid the struggle of trousers and provide easy movement, making getting ready for bed that bit more relaxing.
Suggested Products:
Womenswear - Blanche Cable Knit Sleeveless Poncho Demi Straight Leg Jersey Pull On Trousers
Menswear - Aubrey Straight Fit Elastic Waist Pull-On Trousers
To avoid uncomfortable overhead dressing, especially if you experience stiffness, fully front opening options, such as shirts and nightwear provide a perfect solution.
For those with arthritis in the hands and fingers, fastenings such as buttons and zips can prove particularly tricky, substitute these for adaptive alternatives such as VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners. The Able Label offers a vast range of front opening designs with secure VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners designed to open and close with ease, suitable for reduced dexterity and strength.
For an easier grip on your clothing with zips, apply a zipper pull which can help you 'hook' your fingers through.
For women, bras can prove particularly difficult, as they traditionally fasten at the back. Front opening bras make it a lot easier to reach and grip onto the fastenings. Choose Bras with VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners for added ease of touch closures.
Suggested Products:
Womenswear - Ingrid Jersey Long Sleeve Printed Shirt With VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners Front Opening Bras
Menswear - Michael Brushed Cotton Classic Fit Long Sleeve Shirt With VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners
For greater well-being and comfort, choose fabrics which move with the body rather than against. Super stretch fabrics including jerseys, and viscose with elastane, help make getting in and out of clothes much easier. Stretchy fabrics also give an easy feel and comfort of movement all day.
To keep feet happy, warm and to avoid swelling, choose gentle fabric socks such as bamboo for a soft comfortable fit.

However here are a few tips to help you get started:
Keep your aching joints warm is essential to reducing pain. The best way to do this is by layering up. Layering, instead of one relying on thick, chunky knits, traps hot air in between each piece, providing greater warmth and the ability to keep your body heat contained. You can also remove layers if you’re feeling too warm without having to worry about switching from too hot to too cold.
Hands and feet are just as important. You can layer up your socks in the same way, and choose a warm pair of thick socks with slippers while at home. Obviously you don’t want to impact your ability to use your hands while at home, so consider picking up a wheat warmer which can easily be heated at home and used as a hand warmer when needed.
It’s important to keep your joints mobile and use your muscles to keep them strong to support and protect your joints. Movement also helps with pain and improving stiffness that can come with staying immobile. Staying active doesn’t mean stepping outside if you’re finding the cold difficult, you can do some indoor exercises and Arthritis Action have some recommended chair-based exercises to help with movement.
Enjoying regular hot drinks and meals, are a great way of keeping warm. Arthritis Action UK have some great winter warmer recipes which are healthy and put together with methods that are less fiddly and time-consuming.
Our range of stylish, discreetly adapted clothes mean the amount of effort needed to get dressed independently is minimised. We also ensure that our collections for autumn and winter are clothes that are perfect for layering, meaning you’ll have plenty of choice for winter layers.
On top of our adapted styles on offer, for those that have been diagnosed with arthritis, you could be eligible to shop VAT except across our adapted range.

We have a wide range of items adapted for women and men with easy VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners for simplified touch close fastening, helping to avoid tricky buttons and zips.

As dementia is diagnosed earlier in the disease course, those living with dementia are also more likely to remain active in society.
The impact of World Alzheimer's Month is growing, but the stigmatisation and misinformation that surrounds dementia remains a global problem, that requires global action. Dementia is the leading cause of disability and dependency among the elderly.
Founder Katie and her family know the challenges that Alzheimer's can bring all too well having been a carer for her Nan.
Katie explains that "our aim was to keep Nan as independent as possible for as long as possible - she was very clear this was what she wanted. She lost all strength and had no feeling in her fingers which made fastening buttons particularly difficult. She loved our shirts with VELCRO® Brand Fastening / Fasteners for this very reason and even well into her nineties, she remained able to dress herself with the help of the easier dressing clothes. But, her favourite item of all was the Lilly Luxury Cape as having lost a lot of weight, she would feel the cold but find it hard to take jumpers on and off".
This year’s theme, ‘Know Dementia, Know Alzheimer’s’ has a special focus on post-diagnosis support. Here at The Able Label, we believe in empowering people, such as those with Alzheimer's and potential dressing difficulties, to still enjoy and love fashion.
Adaptive clothing can help to manage and overcome a variety of dressing difficulties and our clothing is specially designed with discrete adaptations and easy to use fastenings to help transform lives, give back confidence, provide dignity and help to maintain independence.
We're proud to work very closely with Alzheimer’s Society and we develop our new ranges alongside them, speaking to individuals with Alzheimer's as well as those caring for them. You can read the feedback from one of our previous visits to a group in the Dementia Together Magazine.
