How to Build The Perfect Autumn Layering Wardrobe

Autumn dressing is all about finding the perfect balance. As the mornings turn cooler and the seasons begin to change, we want clothes that keep us warm and comfortable, while still making us feel like ourselves.

That’s where layering comes in.

Layering is one of the simplest ways to make your wardrobe work harder. It allows you to adapt to changing temperatures, create different looks from the same pieces and, importantly, stay comfortable throughout the day.

Start with a comfortable base

Think soft jersey tops, long-sleeved T-shirts, comfortable blouses and classic shirts. These are the pieces you can wear close to the skin and build the rest of your outfit around.

Look for breathable, comfortable fabrics and silhouettes that give you plenty of room to move. A good base layer shouldn’t feel restrictive underneath your knitwear, it should simply make getting dressed easier.

Neutral shades such as cream, navy, charcoal, black and soft beige are particularly useful, as they can be mixed and matched with almost everything else in your wardrobe.

Make knitwear your autumn hero

Few things say autumn quite like a favourite knitted piece.

A good knit can transform a simple outfit while adding just the right amount of warmth. Choose a relaxed jumper to wear with trousers or jeans, or layer a finer knit over a shirt or blouse for a more polished look.

Don't be afraid to play with shape, either. A longer, relaxed fit can create an effortlessly easy silhouette, while a more structured knit can add definition to an outfit.

Add a layer of warmth

As the temperature drops, it’s time to introduce another layer.

A versatile jacket, gilet or lightweight coat can make all the difference on those particularly chilly autumn days.

When choosing an outer layer, consider what you’ll be wearing underneath it. Look for comfortable shapes that allow enough room for a jumper or cardigan without feeling bulky.

A great autumn coat should also work across your wardrobe. Choose something that looks just as good with jeans and trainers as it does with smart trousers and boots.

Build a colour palette you love

One of the easiest ways to make layering work is to choose colours that naturally complement one another.

Start with a few dependable neutrals and introduce shades that make you feel good. Autumnal colours such as burgundy, green, deep navy and earthy brown can add seasonal interest without making your wardrobe difficult to coordinate.

And remember, there’s no rule that says your autumn wardrobe has to be made up of traditional autumn colours. If you love brighter shades, prints or softer pastels, keep wearing them.
